Company Liability for Undocumented Workers

By Elliott Ozment, immigration attorney

As the debate over immigration reform and undocumented workers heats up, it's more important than ever to verify lawful employment status.

Regardless of where you stand, employers have an obligation to comply with the law. And the law still says that it is illegal to hire an undocumented worker.

Click here to learn how to protect your company from non-compliance penalties.

Pinnacle workshops often feature outside experts on subjects important to our clients. Mr. Ozment led a recent workshop at Pinnacle West End.

State's Jobless Rate Below National Average

Tennessee's steady economic growth over the last few years is beginning to show in the unemployment rate.

Tennessee's unemployment rate in April was 4.4 percent, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The nation's unemployment rate was 4.5 percent in April.

The state unemployment rates were down from the seasonally adjusted March rate of 4.7 percent. Tennessee's April unemployment rate a year ago was 5.2 percent.

Should my business use Remote Deposit?

Any business is eligible to utilize Remote Deposit. However, the service is most effective for companies whose accounts receivables are largely made up of checks.

Here’s how Remote Deposit works:

  • Checks are fed through a scanner that captures an image of the check.
  • The data is then transmitted to Pinnacle over a secure web site connection.
  • The total amount of the scanned checks is deposited to your account. No paper needs to be sent to the bank.
  • After about two weeks, you can destroy the actual checks.

Check with Pinnacle for the technical requirements needed to take advantage of Remote Deposit.

Pinnacle Name Will Go on New SoBro Tower

Signage featuring Pinnacle's name will be visible on both sides of a 29-story, 500,000-square-foot office tower planned for south of Broadway.

The office tower, which will be located on Third Avenue across from the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, will take the name "The Pinnacle at Symphony Place" when it opens in January 2010.

Pinnacle has signed a letter of intent to lease 65,000 square feet of space, which includes the building's eighth, ninth and 10th floors and a full-service financial center on the ground level.
