Habitat, Pinnacle Help Single Moms in Rutherford Eight single moms and their children will soon move into new affordable homes in Rutherford County, thanks to a partnership between Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity and Pinnacle. The two paired up in Habitat's program to build seven homes on Murfreesboro's East Sevier Street, in an area being revitalized with Habitat's help; and another on Jefferson Pike on property donated by Waldron Construction in LaVergne. Pinnacle secured $40,000 in down payment assistance from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, providing $5,000 for each of the eight single mothers buying the homes. "The down payment is often the biggest stumbling block for people trying to buy a home of their own," said Jamie Sweeney, manager of client services for Pinnacle's Murfreesboro market. All of the houses are in existing neighborhoods, and the homeowners have been helping build each other's dwellings as they build "sweat equity," a hallmark of Habitat's program.

What is Pinnacle's process for approving loan requests? Pinnacle uses a signature process that is designed to expedite loan approvals for clients – no committees or out-of-town decision-making by people who know nothing about the client. Our process requires two executives to sign the loan approval. The loan amount determines which two executives must sign off. In addition to the signature process, Pinnacle has two full-time credit officers (one in Nashville and one in Murfreesboro) who focus exclusively on reviewing and approving loans. Everyone involved in the loan process strives to complete loan approvals within 24 to 48 hours.

The Check 21 legislation passed by Congress in 2004 ushered in a new era of banking and struck a real blow to the paper check. For businesses, it opened up a new door to efficiency. The legislation contained a provision that allows banks to clear a check based on an image of the check in lieu of the actual check. As a result, financial institutions began offering remote deposit capture, a way for businesses to make deposits electronically rather than physically going to a bank office. Click here for more on how businesses are using remote deposit.
